detail

Welcome to the official website of Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic dedicated to one of the most important statistical surveys not only in our country but also all over the world.

Census in Slovakia and in all European Union member states will take place in 2021. The preparation of the Census 2021 has begun in Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic in 2014.

What is the Census?

Generally Slovakia obtains data from population and housing censuses every ten years. Census is the most extensive statistical survey with the longest history that is regulated in the Slovak Republic by a special law. Its preparation and implementation is one of the most demanding statistical surveys.

With the census data and information on the demographic, social, cultural, educational and economic level of the society, the number and structure of houses and dwellings are updated. Several of data and information that census provides are unique. The uniqueness means that part of the data needed by statisticians is not collected in any registers or databases of offices and institutions. It is, for example, information about the households and its structure, on inhabitants commute to work, their nationality, religion and level of educational attainment.

Census results are a significant source of data and information that the government and private sector use on the various territorial levels. Census data are the basis of the balance of the population in demographic statistics as well as the sampling frame in several statistical surveys focusing on population and households.

Whereas that the importance and value of census data constantly grows, the European Union and the United Nations proceeded to the international coordination of the census through a worldwide program of population and housing censuses.

Census is mandatory for all the member states of the European Union.
